Information on Travel to Greenwich

Introduction
A recent study was undertaken by the Transition team to determine how Ravensbourne staff could travel to the new building, in comparison with how staff currently travel to the Chislehurst site. As well as discussing approximate routes, travel times and costs for getting from your home to the O2, this report also makes a rough comparison to current approximate travel times and costs for getting from your home to the Chislehurst site.

The information provided in this study is intended as a guideline only, but we hope it will give you a better idea of how to plan your route and calculate the cost of traveling to Greenwich. Due to fluctuations in transport times and prices, we recommend you check with the transport provider for the most up-to-date information.

Regrettably the College is unable to make a contribution towards any increased travel costs, but looking into the possibility of providing staff with season ticket loans. This has gone to the Board of Governors and more information will be available in the near future.

The full Travel Report can be downloaded here.
You will need to log in to the Wiki in order to access the report.

Location
The Chislehurst site is located near to Elmstead Woods train station in Zone 4. The new building at Greenwich is based next to the O2 Arena and the nearest tube station is North Greenwich (a 200m walk) in Zones 2 and 3.

Getting There

Public Transport
The O2 Arena can be reached directly via the Jubilee Line or a number of bus services.

A map of Tube and Rail services is available from Transport for London here: TfL Zones map

There are currently 7 bus routes into North Greenwich, as shown here:

Bus timetables can be found here:
TfL Timetables

Nearby connections are available via the DLR and National Rail.

By Car
There will be no parking facilities provided at the college directly. There will be some provision for disabled parking bays and deliveries. There is a NCP car park for North Greenwich tube, which costs £1,260 for an annual Season Ticket and is often extremely busy. The O2 have a car park, costing £5 a day (£20 on Arena Event days), which is also very busy.

If you travel by train to North Greenwich instead of driving, you may be paying on average 20% less (this varies depending on where you travel from).

Travel Times
The map below plots a majority of staff home locations (based on postcode) and indicates approximate travel times from those locations. Of course this is dependant on a variety of factors and should only be used as a guideline.

Comparison to Chislehurst
A quarter of Ravensbourne staff currently drive to the Chislehurst site. It would cost on average £1,000 more per year (dependent on where you travel from) including petrol & parking at the College to travel to North Greenwich.

Roughly half of all Ravensbourne staff live within London Zones 1 to 4. When travelling by tube or train none of these staff will experience an increase in costs from Elmstead Woods to North Greenwich. Some of these staff will pay approximately the same and some people may even experience a reduction in train cost.

About a quarter of Ravensbourne staff live within London Zones 5 & 6. There are a few locations (Orpington, Chislehurst, Petts Wood) whereby staff do not currently need to travel through Zone 1 – these people will see an increase in cost of approximately 17%-23% when travelling to North Greenwich by train. Many people who already travel into Zone 1 from Zones 5 or 6 will pay approximately the same as they do now.

The remaining quarter of Ravensbourne staff live outside London. If you currently travel via London Bridge, Charing Cross or Waterloo, you most likely buy direct route season tickets to Elmstead Woods currently. When travelling to North Greenwich you will need to travel by tube from one of these stations so you will probably see an increase in your travel cost.

Another possibility that you should look into is buying an Oyster travelcard for the tube on top of your annual railcard into the London Station – this may be cheaper than purchasing an annual travelcard which includes the tube from your local train station.
