Ravensbourne has seen a stream of successes from graduating students this year and D&AD New Blood was no exception, as three students were awarded Pencils at the prestigious event which identifies, showcases and nurtures tomorrow's young creative talented superstars.

Undertaking briefs for high profile brands such as The British Army, Amazon and Crowne Plaza, students Ellie Burns from  BA (Hons) Fashion Promotion, Geli Luna  MA Communication Design and Isabel Mandry, BA (Hons) Digital Advertising and Design were all awarded Pencils.

Ellie was awarded a Wooden Pencil, the equivalent of a bronze award, for her idea #FromSourcetoPlate around Amazon Fresh. Isabel was also awarded a Wooden pencil for her entry around the misconceptions about The British Army. Geli was awarded a Graphite Pencil, the equivalent of a silver award, for her brand identity concept “For Travel That Works” for the Crowne Plaza, a chain of popular hotels.

“For Travel That Works” looks at the idea the new Crowne Plaza caters to the modern business traveller, offering more than just a bed for the night and ensuring guests can work and play in their usual ways, no matter what the city.

Geli said: “The main inspiration for my idea came from talking to my graphic designer sister who said that brands should have a statement, not just in the look but in their overall identity. That's how I came up with the concept of a flexible and adaptive identity that caters to the international market of Crowne Plaza.

“I’m really grateful to my tutor, Peter Smith who allowed us to take on a D&AD New Blood awards brief as our individual project in the first semester. Peter gave me some really constructive comments and has been a huge help through the whole of the course.”

Subject Leader, Peter Smith said: “Geli is a fantastic student and it’s been a delight to teach her. We’re really pleased with her win, it’s very well deserved.”

Geli has now gone on to take part in D&AD New Blood’s Academy an exclusive, creative boot camp for New Blood Pencil winners making the transition from education to industry. Isabel has started work as a junior producer and Ellie is also now working in her role as a PR and social media assistant at Skinnydip London.
