What is LeaF?

LeaF (Learning Facilities) audio visual equipment is provided throughout the college for staff use to aid in the learning and teaching process.

LeaF training is provided throughout the year (consult the Personnel training book).
All systems are self-supporting. Instructions and guidelines are provided within each LeaF cabinet (this document) and online at http://intranet.rave.ac.uk/ict/resources/leaf/

Standard equipment in all LeaF facilities include:

Ceiling mounted projector,
multi-region DVD Player (incorporating CD Player)
, S-VHS player (PAL/NTSC VHS in Lecture Theatre)
, SMART Board (Interactive whiteboard) or electric screen (for projector)
, Amplifier,
Wall mounted speakers,
Desktop PC (excluding Fashion and Boardroom)
, Laptop connectivity (VGA + 3.5mm Audio).

How do I use the LeaF classroom facilities?

Starting up the LeaF Equipment

  1. Using the Sanyo projector remote control slide the switch on the left hand side of the remote control to the "ON" position.
  2. Point the Sanyo remote control toward the ceiling mounted projector.
  3. Press the RED power button on the Sanyo remote control.
  4. Locate and power on ALL devices in the cabinet: JVC video deck, Pioneer DVD player, Denon Amplifier. The power buttons for all cabinet equipment will be found on the front of each unit.
  5. Operating the Electric Screen (not installed in all LeaF classrooms) The paragraph below does not apply to rooms equipped with SMART Boards (Interactive whiteboard)
  6. The screen may not automatically open. If this is the case please locate the screen operation switch and press (in some cases hold the button) until the screen has fully lowered. The switch is located on the wall near or next to the LeaF equipment cabinet.

Using the DVD Player

  1. Point the Sanyo projector remote control towards the ceiling mounted projector and select "VIDEO" by pressing the INPUT button. The projector will take a few seconds to switch between inputs.
  2. Switch the Denon amplifier to DVD using the Function knob.
  3. Insert DVD disc and press Play.

Using the MiniDV/VHS Deck

  1. Point the Sanyo projector remote control towards the ceiling mounted projector and select "VIDEO" by pressing the INPUT button. The projector will take a few seconds to switch between inputs.
  2. Switch the Denon amplifier to VCR1 using the Function knob.
  3. Press either the DV or VHS round buttons on the front of the JVC video deck to select the source you wish to use.
  4. Insert the tape and press play.

Using the LeaF desktop computer

  1. Point the Sanyo projector remote control towards the ceiling mounted projector and select "COMPUTER" by pressing the INPUT button. The projector will take a few seconds to switch between inputs.
  2. Switch the Denon amplifier to CD using the Function knob Ð found on the front of the amplifier.

Connecting and using a Laptop

  1. Point the Sanyo projector remote control towards the ceiling mounted projector and select "COMPUTER" by pressing the INPUT button. The projector will take a few seconds to switch inputs.
  2. Shutdown the desktop PC.
  3. Find the VGA and audio lead beside the LeaF cabinet.
  4. Connect the VGA cable to the VGA socket on the laptop.
  5. Connect the 3.5mm audio lead to the headphone socket on the laptop.
  6. The projector display will automatically switch to the laptop.

Using the SMART Board (not installed in all LeaF Classrooms)

  1. Switch on and log onto the LeaF desktop computer.
  2. Go to the Start menu on the bottom left hand side of the desktop.
  3. Scroll to the Programs tab.
  4. Find the SMART Board folder and select the SMART Board Tools application.
  5. Log out of the computer when finished.

Shutting down the LeaF Equipment
When you have finished with the equipment please do the following:

  1. Power off the projector by pressing the red button on the Sanyo remote control twice.
  2. Power off the Sanyo remote control by sliding the "ON" switch on the left hand side of the Sanyo remote control to "OFF".
  3. Power off ALL devices in the cabinet: JVC video deck, Pioneer DVD player, Denon amplifier.
  4. Retract the screen using the switch on the wall beside the cabinet.
  5. Return these instructions to the leaflet holder inside the cabinet door.
  6. Return all remote controls and SMART Board accessories to the cabinet.
  7. Lock the cabinet and return the keys.

FAQs

The following are some common questions.

Q. Where do I obtain/return LeaF cabinet keys?
A. Staff can borrow LeaF keys from the LRC on presentation of your ID card.

Q. Can I leave the system powered on indefinitely?
A. No. If you do not switch off ALL equipment after use, it will lead to system failure and therefore be unable for use.

Q. I'm not getting an image from projector. What's wrong?
A. Check projector is switched on!

Q. I'm not getting an image from DVD/VHS Video. What's wrong?
A. Press the "Input" button on the projector remote control to switch to VIDEO input.

Q. I'm not getting an image from the desktop PC or my laptop. What's wrong?
A. Press the "Input" button on the projector remote control to switch to COMPUTER input.

Q. I'm not getting an image from my laptop. What's wrong?
A. PC laptop - ensure the laptop is set to output video over VGA. This is achieved by pressing a key combination such as fn+F8 (all PC laptops have differing key combinations - please check your documentation). Mac laptop running Mac OS X - under Displays in System Preferences click "Detect Displays" and then choose to "Mirror Displays" output, found under the "Arrangement" tab.

Q. I'm still getting no image from laptop. What else might be wrong?
A. Ensure the VGA lead is connected to the laptop VGA socket. Shutdown the LeaF desktop PC so the laptop is the only computer connected.

Q. I'm not getting any sound from DVD/VHS Video
. What's wrong?
A. Ensure the amplifier is turned on and the correct source is selected, e.g. DVD or VCR1.

Q. I'm not getting any sound from a desktop PC/laptop
. What's wrong?
A. Ensure the amplifier is turned on and the correct source is selected, e.g. PC.

Q. I have piece of equipment X. Can I connect it to the LeaF facility?
A. No. You may connect an external computer such as a laptop, but no other equipment may be connected. If you have a regular need, or the service doesn't meet your expectations, please place a request through the service desk.

Maintenance

ICT tests LeaF installations at the beginning of each term to ensure they are running correctly. Under our contract with the suppliers, Saville Audio Visual visit the College once per year to perform preventative maintenance on all static LeaF facilities. This work is usually occurring over the Summer break. If you discover a fault, please report it using the service desk.

Help & Assistance

If you are experiencing difficulty in accomplishing a task:

  1. Consult these instructions starting at the beginning of this guide. If it is a problem with the SMART Board, consult the Help files within the SMART Board software on the LeaF PC.
  2. Visit the LeaF resource website on the College Intranet at http://intranet.rave.ac.uk/ict/resources/leaf/
  3. If the above steps do not provide an answer contact your local LeaF representative for assistance.
  4. If your local LeaF representative is unable to resolve the query, raise the fault with ICT on the Service Desk.
  5. If urgent assistance is required after following all the steps above, contact the ICT Help Desk, ext. 8208.
  6. If ICT are unable to resolve the issue, faults are escalated to Saville Audio Visual (Ann Picard +44 (0)1252 893216). Please note: Saville's response time is 2 days.
