IT Induction Movie
(visible internally only)
When you log on to a computer using your account you will have access to email, the Internet, a personal storage area, a public storage area, unstructured or workgroup storage, printing and the local drives on the computer for current project storage.
When you log onto a PC you'll get a standard desktop. It is devoid of icons for a reason; when you log off the desktop resets to a standard one. So don't save any work on it. It will get deleted when you log off!

The other things to take note of are the icons down the side. You have your standard My Documents, where you should save your work. My computer, for accessing network drives and inserted CDs and memory sticks, shortcuts to interent browsers and email, and a report a fault icon. One other thing to note is the recycle bin does not function. When you delete things, they are gone, so be careful.
You Mac desktop is different to the PC. Firstly, you can save files onto it and the remain when you log off. Secondly the trash will work, however files remain only for as long as you are logged in; once you log off, it gets wiped. The bar at the top changes depending on what application you have running.

You Mac storage area, accessible from the finder (the face icon) in the Dock (the panel of icons at the bottom of the screen) is the same area as on a PC. All that is different are the names of the folders. In the finder the Home folder, if the h: drive on a PC. My Documents is simply the Personal folder in this home drive. For more information read the Storage and Quota part of the induction notes.
