Welcome to your IT Induction

Ravensbourne College has a wide variety of creative courses, from fashion to graphic design from moving image and animation to broadcasting, and from further education to Postgraduate education; all underpinned by their use of digital technologies.

We would like to introduce you to the way the systems operate and to the departments which are integral to the day to day running of the college's information technology.

Firstly an introduction to the departments

The IT function of the College is distributed through 5 main areas: Strategy and R&D, TT, IS, Web development, and ICT.

Strategy and R&D

Strategy and R&D integrates the various components of the College's IT functions, and is responsible for service development, and planning new services. If you have any comments about the services, or would like to contribute to future plans, contact dotrave@rave.ac.uk, or watch out for planning events. Ravensbourne College is unique in the sector in offering students the opportunity to participate in resource planning.

TTs

There is a department of Tutors know as TTs, or Technical Tutors. These individuals have specialist knowledge in digital technology areas of the college, including working with interactive media, constructed and virtual environments, broadcast and post production. They will guide your learning experience in what regards to the application of digital technology to the creative industries.

ICT

The ICT team is made up of a team of dedicated individuals who are responsible for networking, computer security, desktop support, and the deployment of software and hardware for client computing within the college, and may assist you with IT support, via the ICT helpdesk in the Learning Resource Centre.

Web Development

The Web development group is responsible for the College website and Intranet, and works with many departments and individuals, and educators within the College to develop and deliver online learning resources. The Intranet site is an important avenue of communication between the College and its students - and the service there is developing all the time.

IS

The Information Systems department or IS for short, deals with the development of the software required for the administration of the College. Though you won't have direct contact with this department the software they develop makes possible the administration of your records and the management of your IT account to access College resources.

In addition to these 5 areas, Registry is the department that grants you access to the college resources including IT by completing your enrolment. The reason for this induction is to introduce new users to the Ravensbourne system, its environment and rules providing you with guidelines for best practice and to identify users skills.

The college facilities are made up of research, production and teaching resources. We try and keep a balance between platforms, hardware and software. Areas of the college have been created to suit production needs, for example, scanning and printing, post production and 2d/3d graphics.
