Ravensbourne students have designed a community garden for children to be built at the Robert Owen Nursery School and Children’s Centre in Greenwich.
Five students from both BA (Hons) Architecture and BA (Hons) Interior Design Environment Architectures formed “Team Magic” and went on to win the competition which was set by the school in collaboration with tutors from Ravensbourne. A total of six concepts were presented and three were shortlisted with “Team Magic” securing first place.
The team, comprising of Jed Maiden, Leah Ward, Finlay Johnson, Nusrat Hussain and Billie Miller, designed a garden with a town theme and abstract play in mind where families living in Greenwich and the surrounding areas can relax and play.
Play features in the garden are separated into 'adventure' 'challenge' and 'magic' areas. Abstract structures mimic shop fronts where children can sell home grown vegetables, introducing them to the value of money. The design also features an amphitheatre with a ‘bicycle road’, leading onto other aspects such as the existing mud kitchen.
Student, Jed Maiden said: “We really wanted the garden to suit children of a variety of ages and personalities which is why it is designed to encompass different aspects of play which suits both introverted and extroverted children.
"It is important that life lessons are learned from an early age and we liked the idea of incorporating that into the play which is why, for example, we introduced the road which will require learning aspects of safety”.
Headteacher of Robert Owen Nursery School and Children’s Centre, Ruth Mercer said: “We were looking for a design that reflected biodiversity and could be used by the youngest children in the community.
“Myself and the judging panel were really delighted with the outcome. The students really understood the ethos behind the project. We are now hoping our dream can become a reality.”
The school are appealing for anyone that can help build the garden.
Ruth commented: “If anyone from the local community could donate, materials, funds or their time we’d be really grateful.
“We think this will be a real asset to the local community and the surrounding areas and would love to see this built within the next few years.”
The collaboration reflects Ravensbourne’s ethos where students learn ethical sustainable ways to harness their creativity.
